The pony rides at Sunset Park wrapped up by early evening on August 22, but the splash pad ran until the light went. That quiet doesn't last. What most people miss about the West Plains is that its calendar runs backwards from the rest of Spokane County. While South Hill and downtown wind down for fall, the West Plains spends the next few weeks running its busiest overlapping stretch of the year, a farmers market closing out its season, a casino calendar hitting its fall stride, and a hiking trail with maybe a month of good footing left before the weather turns. The Cheney Farmers Market runs 2nd and 4th Saturdays from May through October at Veterans Memorial Park, and every year since 2023 it has used one of its final late-season Saturdays to throw itself a proper send-off. Last year's Fall Fest, held that September, brought out more than 40 vendor booths selling honey, farm eggs, and handmade soap, plus a set from local musician Mason Van Stone and a pumpkin-painting table that kept kids occupied while their parents worked through the produce stands. It is a market that started as a small experiment to connect Cheney's farmers with Cheney's kitchens, and three years in it has turned into the kind of event where you run into half the people you know from the grocery store, the school pickup line, and the gym.

If you have never made it to a Saturday market this year, the closing weeks are the ones that matter. The selection is at its widest, the weather still cooperates, and the Fall Fest version adds enough programming that it functions less like errand-running and more like an actual outing.

A New Room To Gather In

For years the honest answer to "where do you go for a drink on the West Plains" was Spokane proper, twenty minutes east. That changed when Matt and Monica Swanson opened West Plains Brewing on Sunset Highway in Airway Heights, a 3,600-square-foot taproom Matt describes as the retirement project he actually wanted.

"I don't want to retire and die two years later, which is what I've heard happens so many times to men. I want to have a purpose."

The space leans hard into repurposed materials, chairs Matt built himself, church pews bought from a shuttered Cheney congregation, and a bar top finished in epoxy over reclaimed wood. The patio holds about 25 people and allows dogs, which matters in a neighborhood where half the households seem to have one.

It joins a dining scene that has quietly filled in around it. D'bali Asian Bistro and Masselow's Steakhouse, tucked inside Northern Quest, both turn up on current best-of lists for Airway Heights dining, and a Habit Burger location has been working through city permitting on Highway 2, its third attempt at a Spokane-area foothold since 2019. None of this rivals downtown's restaurant density. But it means a Friday night no longer requires a drive across the county to find something worth the trip.

The Casino That Doubles As The Region's Concert Hall

Northern Quest Resort and Casino does something most neighborhoods don't get to claim: it functions as a regional concert venue that happens to sit inside a residential area. Earth, Wind & Fire played there on September 6, part of a fall booking calendar that treats the West Plains as a legitimate stop for national touring acts rather than a detour off I-90.

For residents, this cuts two ways. It means genuine entertainment options without a drive into Spokane's arena district. It also means traffic and parking pressure on show nights that a lot of Spokane neighborhoods never have to think about. Either way, checking the Northern Quest calendar before making weekend plans has become a small but real part of living out here, the way checking road construction schedules is in other parts of the county.

Last Weeks For Deep Creek Canyon

The most underrated piece of the West Plains identity has nothing to do with restaurants or events. It's geological. Deep Creek Canyon, inside Riverside State Park, is a stretch of basalt rimrock carved by the same Ice Age floodwaters that shaped the scablands stretching west toward Grand Coulee. The trailhead sits off Seven Mile Road, and the hike takes you through a creek bed that runs nearly dry most of the year but floods hard during a rain-on-snow event in late winter.

Fall is the window locals actually use it. The creek bed is walkable, the basalt outcroppings hold their color in low afternoon light, and the crowds that show up for spring wildflowers have thinned out. Once the weather turns wet, the footing gets unreliable fast, so the next several weekends are effectively the last easy ones until spring.

The Short Season

None of these things, the market, the brewery, the casino calendar, the canyon, were designed to overlap. But they do, for about three weeks every September, and then the market closes for the winter, the trail gets muddy, and the West Plains goes back to being the place people drive through on the way to somewhere else.
